The Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Conference, hosted by the Australian Institute of Physics and commonly known as “Wagga”, is a long-standing event within the Australasian physis community. Traditionally held in Wagga Wagga, Australia, it attracts a strong cohort of researchers across academia and industry.
For 2027, the 49th Wagga will be co-located with AMN12 in Auckland, bringing an additional group of approximately 50 - 100 delegates and incorporating dedicated condensed matter sessions within the wider nanotechnology and materials programme.
The Conference will showcase research across areas such as condensed matter physics, superconductivity, magnetism, photonics, and advanced electronic materials, offering valuable opportunities for cross-disciplinary engagement.
In addition to its technical programme, Wagga is well known for its strong community culture. This includes the traditional trivia night, a focus on equity, and ensuring a diverse group of speakers.
Up to 10 awards will be given to Australia-based students and/or Early Career Researchers who are working in condensed matter physics and who are financial members of the Australian Institute of Physics. See the Condensed Matter and Materials (CMM) group page on the AIP website for more details and all the requirements of these awards.
The awards are in the form of NZD940 discounts on registration. For a student, this covers the early registration fee plus the cost of the trivia night.
Application for the Student and ECR Awards is made during abstract submission. You will be asked for your AIP membership number and to upload a two-page CV with required details.
Wagga conferences have a long tradition of hosting a trivia night. The prize for the winning team is to have their names engraved forever on the Lindsay Davis Cup (see picture). Last year’s winning team was an Aussie-Kiwi-international hybrid.
The Empire Tavern (Garden Bar) has been reserved for the pub-style trivia night on Tuesday 9 February 2027. It is one block from the conference venue.
Only 200 places are available at the trivia night so get in early!
Tickets to the trivia night cost $20 and include food, entertainment and prizes. Attendees need to purchase their own drinks. Tickets are secured when registering for the conference. Conference registrants can purchase an additional ticket for one guest to the trivia night.
